It's the other way around: The newer devices do not support the old protocol. Mounting them as mass storage and working on the file system is the way to go. The benefits are portability of the approach. And if you organize your waypoints in several gpx files it's much easier to add or delete some. The big drawback: You can't exchange stuff on-the-fly.
