This is one of the key factors. Imagine me and my wife spending, say, five days 
on our mountain trek in Taurus, only meeting a couple of shepherds during that 
time, and it would take one day to reach the closest AC socket in some village 
:). There I carry my Garmin 62s and ten AA batteries (i.e. five sets) just in 
case. I would not rely on any GPS-enabled smartphone, PDA, tablet, etc. in that 
situation. (Well, a solar charger could be an option, but I have to be sure 
that in the worst case I can _always_ use my GPS even when there is no sunlight 
for a way or two, etc.)

That said, I understand that for those people who do not need real energy 
autonomy (only doing day hikes etc.), devices like Motorola DEFY can be a great 
option.
