Hi Oliver, > the problem with the maps on DVD is their format. The "official" DVDs > are products of the well known company EADS and the format is their > proprietary format.
thanks for confirming what I suspected :) I remember to have read somewhere there used to be a tool to convert the data that has disappeared because of EADS's threats. > Don't ask me why German authorities sell maps, payed by taxes, to the > people, that paid the tax, in a proprietary format of a company that > tries to benefit from that trade in every aspect. So true and sad. I would be willing to pay for high-quality current maps, but not if I can only use it in their proprietary tool (which if you ever had the chance/need to use it, is not even very good in my opinion) Are there alternatives? For example can I buy garmin maps and use them or have they been DRMed to death, too? In the wiki page (http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/qlandkartegt/index.php?title=A_Grand_Day_Out) a very nice map is shown, and in the text it says "Some of you may be wondered about the map by now. What you see is a very nice, high detail topographic map of scale 1 pixel/meter. The map can be bought from the local authorities." but the link points to the landing page of Bavaria's mapping authority, and I'm not sure what to look for on their page. Apart from that I'm looking for maps of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. I'd be grateful to be made aware of any alternatives.
