I am really amazed how everyone is so enthusiastic to provide informaton that
is of no concern of the one
requesting it. I thought after the Snowden disaster people start to think twice
on how much details have to
be supplied.
Techhnically there is no reason to transmit the user-agent information at all.
As all information is simple
data, there is no need to adopt the result to the used user-agent. And as you,
Christoph, pointed out it will
not prevent missuse of the tile service.
The only reason to supply it is because the OSM tile service requires it.
Because there is either a control
freak in charge or a statistic freak. But from my point of view it is non of
the OSM folks concern what user-
agent I use.
I agree with the OSM folks that leeching their servers is a bad thing. And I
totally aggree to block IP
addresses that cause too much traffic. I blocked and will block any wish or
attempt to make QLGT a second
MOBAC.
But I am definetly against transmitting details that shouldn't be of the
concern of a free public service. If
OSM wants to have 100% conrol they should close their API. Many commercial map
providers do it this
way. If they don't want QLGT to use their service, fine. A single email and I
remove the builtin link with the
next release. But if they want to be used by applications like QLGT, they
should stop acting like big
cooperated bussines and keep user details as much private as possible. And if
they think they gain anything
with that user-agent thing, they have to live with the fact that users tend to
spoof that information. As it
can be done with every browser known to me.
I do agree with you, that the user-agent string should be compliant to the
specification. I will change that.
But I will take my freedom to keep the agent anonymous by mimicking a 0815
agent. If any service provider
has a problem with that, contact me. I will remove the service asap. But I will
not sacrifice my privacy more
than necessary. Especially not because some users want to be perform blind
obediance.
Just my 2 cents on that topic
