Hi,
I'm the original author of the patch concerning Live Map and check
version update.
To answer your question :
*Christoph Biedl wrote :*
*And as long as QLGT connects to www.qlandkarte.org
<http://www.qlandkarte.org> during each*
*application start, tile usage privacy isn't any of my major concerns.*
The idea was to provide the users, a database of online map easy to
install and as an additionnal functionnality a way to know if the current
qlandkarte version is up to date.
Actually to answer this feature, a webservice written in PHP
available at this address
http://www.qlandkarte.org/webservice/qlandkartegt.php?wsdl is available to
collect information about latest maps available and latest qlandkartegt
version available.
Because all users are not registered in the mailing list I was
thinking it was a good idea. And why not making Qlandkarte connect directly
to sourceforge.net ? Because Qlandkarte has a website and sourceforge is a
source website among other. If people are still in older revision and the
map or executable hosting change, we can still provide this functionnality
by simply updating the webservice.
So as you say, qlandkarte connect on start to check if a newer version
is available, maybe the awkwardness was to provide this functionnality
without telling the user.
What I can propose is to tell the user at the first start about this
functionnality and let him decide to activate it on each start or simply go
to the help menu and use "check for update.." menu action.
Tell me what you prefer and I will send back a patch to update this.
And again sorry for the misunderstanding ...
Fabrice

WatchGuard Dimension instantly turns raw network data into actionable
security intelligence. It gives you real-time visual feedback on key
security issues and trends. Skip the complicated setup - simply import
a virtual appliance and go from zero to informed in seconds.
