Hello RJ
I think there is no need to convert your *.hgt files to TIFF
Qlandkartegt can load the HGT files , so you can add HGT files as DEM for
your Freizeitkarte vectorial map and no conversion is needed.
For Portugal you will get a set of 28 HGT files from viewfinder panoramas.
This could be a bit dificult to manage so you might want to build an unique
DEM file covering all your country. You can do this very easy with a gdal
virtual file (*.VRT)
To do so:
1-download all the HGT files covering your area and put them in the same
folder ( eg: C:/CARTO/DEM/PORTUGAL)
2- In a comand line go to the folder in wich gdalbuildvrt.exe is placed.
(eg in my windows: C:/Archivos de programa/QLandkarteGT/gdal/apps )
3- In the command line execute this:
gdalbuildvrt.exe C:/CARTO/DEM/PORTUGAL/portugal-hgt1sec.vrt
C:/CARTO/DEM/PORTUGAL/*.hgt
(replace the paths to the folders according to your folder structure)
Doing so you will get a .VRT file named *portugal-hgt1sec.vrt* that contain
the link to all the hgt files in that folder. From now you can manage this
.vrt file as an unique DEM file and consencuently if you add it to a map as
aDEM you are bringing all the hgt files at once.
This process to build the vrt files takes a few seconds.
Note that if you have already installed the new Qmapshack you can do this
process more easy with the "build VRT" tool (menu tools-> Build VRT)
----
For linux users: The process is the same. and as gdal will be installed you
can open a terminal in the folder you have the HGT files and execute this:
gdalbuildvrt portugal-hgt1sec.vrt *.hgt
------
Hope this helps
