Make sure you've tuned the performance of your LDAP. See the
Faq-O-Matic at www.openldap.org for details.
In short: make sure you have a "-" in front of the filename in
syslog.conf if you log through syslog, to prevent syslogd from trying to
sync the file system all the time.
Also, use indexing (make sure you index both "mail" and
"mailaternateaddress").
