Theoretically, is it not possible to have the user login as any one of the
following:

<user>@<domain>
<user>.<domain>
<user>#<domain>
<user>%<domain>
<domain>-<user>

and have the mailMessageStore always set up as:

/home/qmail/maildirs/<domain>-<user>/Maildir
or
/home/qmail/maildirs/<domain>-<user>/Maildir/

(depending on whether mailMessageStore needs a trailing slash, per my
original question - which I still need an answer to).

You would still have the benefit of a much nicer ls -las, regardless of the
user login style.

I'm still leaning towards <user>@<domain> simply because of these reasons,
in no particular order:

1) Eric has used it successfully for a year

2) I'm building a SquirrelMail webmail interface for my users. I don't
anticipate a lot of MUA variety from my users. If they report a problem with
an MUA, I can always ask them to use the webmail as a workaround.

3) ., #, %, reminds me too much of the difficult UUCP, sendmail days

4) My users are more likely to remember their email address to specify as a
login, than one of the variations above.
