The md5 passwords in ldap and qmail-ldap are stored as base64 and not
as hexstring. Use the digest tool included in qmail-ldap to generate
md5 passwords.

Your grep tool seems to be strange. Try grep -i "md5" *.[ch] I
haven't tried it but my guess is that it will find at least some
files (digest.c, digest_md5.c, checkpassword.c, ...)
