 Thanks to all who answered.

 Unfortunetly I've received answer with solutions that I've
already tried:

 - Increasing the cachesize and dbcachesize parameters
 - Including the indexes: mail and mailAlternateAddress and
   running slapindex after the changes keeping down slapd

 However I still got a poor performance when my OpenLDAP
server have more than 15000 entries.. perhaps I should
redirect this question to the OpenLDAP mailing list..
