Bingo!!!  That's the problem.  It couldn't find the ldap and lber
library.  Thanks.

PS. Adding to my collection of incidents where time is wasted because I
refuse to install everything into /usr/local.  One of these days, I will
give in and start installing things into /usr/local ;-)
