1) Load averages are not always indicative of a busy system. High load averages, are also not indicative of a problem. If your OpenLDAP was compiled with thread support, load average could be useless, same goes for M-Vault (which is very likely multithreaded). If it wasn't compiled with threading support, then you'd have high load averages on busy systems. 2) Use the latest version of OpenLDAP, and try a user-space threading library like GNU Pth for performance, and quite possibly stability reasons. 3) Do not use Berkeley DB, it changes often, use GDBM instead.
