I don't know how to try if authentication works itself, but you can
check if your mailserver supports auth the following way:

balu@balu:~> telnet mail.example.com 25

250-mail.example.com
250-PIPELINING
250-AUTH=LOGIN PLAIN

If your mailserver lists those AUTH-lines it should be aware of
smtp-auth with the listed authtypes e.g. LOGIN or PLAIN
