I didn't try iPlanet, but I wonder is OpenLDAP so slow? People says iPlanet can answer thousands of searches in a second, but how long is the turn-around-time? OpenLDAP can respond within 100msec to a hundred of searches or more in a second. If you are not satisfied, you can get a load balancer such as UltraMonkey and add ldap servers under it.
