It's not the qmail-lspawn LDAP search, it's the qmail-pop3d LDAP search. Look at it while local deliveries are made, or tail -f it, and grep it if it's too busy. qmail-local searches for mail=email@address. My accountstatus has always worked fine. There's a possibility the LDAP server is not returning accountstatus due to an ACL. Also a good idea is to run qmail-ldap with debugging enabled.
