What is the easiest way to do so on a running system other than getting stock qmail and patching and reconfiguring the conf files and the make files.
Keep the old directory around so that you can look up the changes you made easily. I don't know of any better way to do this.

For what it's worth, I put together qmail-ldap-20021201.patch, qmail-ldap-control_20021126, and smtp-auth-20020501a.patch into one patch that works for me under Solaris, at:

Let me know if you have any problems with that patch. Note that it works best with the GNU 'patch'. You'll definitely have to edit Makefile and qmail-ldap.h to suit your environment.
