This is very OpenLDAP specific and should probably go on their mailing
list. My expirience with OpenLDAP is that it depends on the backend and on
some obscure settings for the backend (cache size, sync/async, etc.).
It is possible that the indices get overloaded and resized or something
similar.

For huge imports I normaly use slapcat/slapadd unless my ldif file is in
the new commeted version that ldapsearch produces and slapadd can't read
:(
