djbdns? :-) Anyway, back to your problem. Nothing beats strace for finding out things. Why don't you: "strace -o /tmp/strace.log -f -p <PID of tcpserver for qmail-smtpd>" [that's for Linux. Figure it out for other OSes] Then "telnet localhost 25" and observe the hang.
