an end of line had crept into the middle of the line calling svscan in
inittab

I still have two lines:
root      1755  0.5  0.5  1088  324 ?        S    02:05   0:00 supervise
supervise
root      4167  0.0  0.5  1088  324 ?        R    02:05   0:00 supervise
supervise
why not one but hopefully thats fine
