mbox or Maildir format? Both are perfectly possible in /var/spool/mail
(we currently do Maildir in /var/spool/mail as well).
If mbox: qmail-pop3d can't do it. If Maildir: get a checkpassword
module that understands /var/spool/mail. I don't know if any are
readily available.
