Good idea to upgrade. Vpopmail 5.4 includes lots of security and bug fixes over 5.2.1, QmailAdmin 1.2 has vast improvements on 1.0.6.
The solution to your problem is to configure qmailadming with --disable-ipauth option. This should work with 1.0.6 until you get around to updating your system.
