Chris, Looking at the patch and the comments in the message thread it has been posted in, I think that the patch raises many issues. Here are the main ones:
1. Breaks multipart mime mails 2. Uses stdio - which Dan has avoided and written his own libs to protect Qmail from broken functions in the package (solve by rewriting using Dans functions). 3. Breaks Digitally signed Emails The first two look fixable, it is this last one that I can't see how to fix. If the MUA is used to digitally sign the email - the MTA is can't touch it without breaking the digital signature (a show stopper for me).
