I talked with my Sr guy here, and he feels that rsyn should work on that with no issue... We rsync linux distros locally with gazillions of files, and have rsynced over 10GB of data over a 2 day period.... It does/will take a while, but once the initial rsync is done it should be much easier to keep it caught up. Tape is going to be slower than rsync... For rsync, are you using the newer version via ssh? That should work smoother/faster...
LVM snapshots may be the way to go though...
