Short answer is that it depends.
Most carriers allow you to send emails to the number and domain (ie:
555-555-1...@verizon.com). This works in most cases (be aware that
normally the incoming user is charged for that text message), but you
are limited to something like 68 characters, so if you send the entire
email it will either be truncated, dropped, or sent across multiple SMS
messages.
There are some SMS gateway devices that you can purchase that plug into
the back of your server and allow you to send SMS messages that way -
basically a cell phone that plugs into a serial port.
If the email option works for you, great. If not, you'll want to google
the SMS gateways to learn more information.
