The problems people have had with odd characters in account names should
be remedied by the latest qmail-toaster release.
That being said, I don't think this is a problem with the dash per se.
Is there perhaps a badmailto rule you've set up which is blocking it?
I've had this happen before.
What do you get when you try to send a message from russ@ to russ-test@ ?

Never seen it crap out on a hyphen before, but there are other
non-standard (but legal) characters in names that chkuser will barf on,
so I tend to leave it disabled in my own toaster.
