We should probably decide on a format. I want to create something that can
be printed or viewed online. That means, specifically, not wiki format.
It could be latex (but not enough people know that), html (but that's not
very easily printed unless really properly marked up), ... Thoughts?
I think wiki is perfect. We could always make a PDF out of it. The homepage
is also printable in a nice way. So I don't see a reason for directly
filling it using latex.

I spent an hour or so yesterday looking at docuwiki and its capabilities,
including reviewing its source code. If it can be made to do what we need, a
wiki is certainly a good way to have this kind of collaborative work going on.

Although there is no existing support for printing a "book" from a set of wiki
pages (only printing a single page via the browser), it does not appear very
difficult to add that functionality by writing a new renderer. The problem is
with plugins, which would each need to be similarly modified.

I don't know why it's that important to print a whole book. Generally I would think to move each big topic (1.x, 2.x and not 1.1.x) to a separate page and build an index of them. To print them out should work almost perfect. To convert them to PDF and combine them is also possible. I don't think we need an always up-to-date PDF, so this process is only needed each 6 month for example (or with each new major release.)

Except for the book character I don't see many advantages of using PDF or any other publishing system compared to Wiki. The major Wiki features like collaboration and always up-to-date are just really strong arguments.

Sebastian, do you have any non-standard plugins (i.e. not part of the docuwiki
distribution) installed or planned?

Yes, we have added "textile", "markdown", "note" and made numerous modifications of dokuwiki to match our requirements.

If you do not have any non-standard
plugins installed nor do you plan to install any, then I would propose that
"THE OFFICIAL QOOXDOO HOWTO" be hosted on the wiki. If you have non-standard
plugins installed or plan to install any, then I'd still need to rethink,
based on which they are and how difficult writing renderers for them would be.

I don't understand why the usage of plugins has any impact on the decision to use a wiki or not to use a wiki.

Cheers,

Sebastian
