Now got it to work with mod_deflate.
The problem was that my apache 2.2.4 installation identifies (through
mime.types) files with ending .js as "application/x-javascript".
The compression ratio is documented in the deflate.log as described in
the apach2 mod_deflate manpage:
GET /nra/app/script/nra.js HTTP/1.1" 226527/1157427 (19%)
So the compression ratio is 19% which means that the traffic caused by
loading the file is 19% of the original file.

"Vary: Accept-Encoding" & "Content-Encoding:gzip" is what we need.
You can log information about compression (what is compressed, what is
not, compression rate) by apache.
