There is no real need for the generator to do repository checkouts (i.e. to use some kind of version control client like svn), and it doesn't so now. All it does is to download from stock http:// URLs, and this is what we can continue to use.

All a contrib has to do is to provide a http:// download (root) URL in the catalog. Then, entries in config files with "contrib://" are simply resolved by looking up the actual download URL from the contrib catalog.
