When the client connects, what do you see in your Linux logs? When you telnet in, can you enter a valid password and get a count of messages in the mailbox? What's "Linux 76.2"? Did you mean Red Hat 7.2? Remember that the Linux (kernel) version is not the same as the distribution (eg. Red Hat) version.
