Thanks Ross

I to use Xampplite on flash drives, the only reason I'm looking at other
options is because under MOE3 (win 7) students can't run the set up bat
file at school and IMS seem to think that the ability to run an exe on a
flash drive is less threatening then running a bat file and have set a
global policy that restricts students running a bat file. I now am thinking
about converting the bat to an exe because xampplite is very quick and easy

Cheers

Subject: RE: [qsiteict] SQL & MIS

Damien,

We have been using xammp lite since 2007. Apache web server - PHP and PERL
built in plus a MYSQL server. It works a treat, but is difficult (for
students) to transfer to a live web page e.g. MIS. When you give a user DB
privaleges in MIS you will get $con to copy and paste. You will also get
listed separately the username, password and server name so you can break
down mysql_connect() for the students. You should print the information on
student's db page immediately and twice. One for you and one for them.
Finding the information after the db has been created in a pain.

I have used MIS last year for students' Major Projects and will not this
year!

PHP pages hosted in MIS do not return an error messages for Parse errors,
unexpected T_echo errors and numerous other error categories. In MIS when a
syntax error occurs the page is blank. When using Xampp this only occurs
when the PHP works but there is an error in the SQL being passed to the SQL
server. PHP code is already pretty hard to debug (without CS5) this makes it
close to impossible for students to find syntax errors in code.

Hope this helps

Damien,

By default, students do not have a database allocated to them in MIS. Your
MIS administrator is the only person who can create these databases from
somewhere in MIS - it's been a long time (& I've since given up on using MIS
for hosting web pages) . We had a large number of the databases not
working after the MIS administrator created the accounts, so we had to
forward the account details to the help desk and they set up all the
databases that didn't work.

I have just finished a 2 day course with Richard Kelly and Paul Herring, and
we ran xampp very successfully from memory sticks. Xampp runs a database
and web server from their memory stick and hosts it through localhost. This
is how I will approach it next time I teach it, cos the kids can take the
memory stick home and still access a web/database server.

Cheers & Beers

Cruickers.
