I've been using this for quite a while now:

Next Video Converter
http://www.nextvideosoft.com/next-video-converter-free.html
Not 100% happy with it though, I find the interface isn't always as intuitive
as it should be, and there have been times where the conversion process hasn't
worked.

Before that, I used WinFF:
http://winff.org/html_new/
It's been a while since I've used it though, so may be worth a
revisit/re-evaluation...

Sorry, never tried running either of these without 'installing' them first.

I'd also be keen to hear what others offer/suggest.

Cheers,

Hi
I've been bombarded with requests over the last few weeks for requests for
software to convert video files (to allow for some editing).

I was hoping someone from the list may have the "panacea"!!!

I'm after:

-an application/s that is/are free
-converts .mod,mp2,mp4,.flv, flip to .avi (these are the "formats" we
currently have from our video cameras)
-that can preferably be installed and run from the executable in the
directory, enabling a shortcut, rather than requiring a complete school re-image

Not after much I know!!!!!! Any advice would certainly be welcome.
