OK the only difference is that (at least for me) using lightDM prevents the systray from crashing, and using a console-based DM (I use emptty on one install) crashes the systray. I can't for the life of me figure out why.
But I briefly tried the git version of qtile and that fixes it (no longer crashes when using emptty), so I will wait for the fix to be released.
