I would double check with a urologist on this however I'm pretty sure that as long as the saline is sterile--as well as the irrigation syringe etc. there should be no danger. In rehab--Santa Clara Valley Rehabilitation in San Jose, CA--irrigating a catheter (in my case single use internal catheter) with 40ml of saline was standard procedure after each cath.
In addition I wrote a column for the online version of New Mobility magazine about irrigating with a 40ml solution of a (prescription only) mixture of an antibiotic called Neosporin G.U. Irrigant mixed with saline. This is NOT the same Neosporin that you purchase over the counter. I have been using it when my urine gets cloudy, smelly and seems to have a UTI brewing--that and remembering to drink more water. So far it has kept UTI's at bay. Here is the link to the free online column--the Neosporin Gu irrigation part is in the 2nd 1/2 of the lengthy answer: http://www.newmobility.com/articleView.cfm?id=11655&srch=Neosporin%20Gu All the best!
