Believe it or not, my wife and I agree that the biggest impact to our family quality of life has been the purchase of a shotgun (highly directional) microphone were Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
To answer your question, yes, there is a minor problem with ambient noise... but I have less of a problem with ambient noise now that I have my new microphone than I used to have with my old (cheap wired) headset. This microphone is much less affected by the television and by other conversations in the room. The microphone stand was ordered from Amazon.com. There are details below... but the wonderful thing about having a desk mounted shotgun microphone is that I can set up my computer on a table, and use it without being cabled to the computer. And right now I am turned on my side and using my computer... it used to be a problem to be on my side when I was wearing a headset. Re: Dragon performance: I find that Dragon is much more accurate with this microphone than with my previous microphone. I am using an extremely high end microphone with a wireless hookup, but for some reason it's not nearly as accurate as it was a year ago. I switched from professional to preferred a little while ago and at first there was no significant difficulties for me, but I have noticed more problems with accuracy despite the fact I'm using extremely good microphones. I would appreciate if you could let me know where you got the stand for your microphone. Regarding running Dragon NaturallySpeaking under Windows 7: I have no idea about that one. I am running XP Pro. Re: microphones: I recently updated a "shotgun" microphone. I can sit up to 6 away from it and Dragon NaturallySpeaking works just fine. The microphone I am using is an ATR6550 shotgun microphone from Audio-Technica. The microphone sells for about 70 dollars or so (e.g. from Amazon.com) and you need to buy a microphone stand. I have found that Dragon works better with this microphone rather than my own headset. The thing I like most is that I'm no longer connected by a cable to my computer. I can cruise into the other room to say hello to someone and pull back up to my computer whenever I like. Which version of Dragon will not work with Windows 7? Because I was running version 10.1 preferred without any difficulties and what happened when you tried to use the current version of Dragon you have? I can't really get it to do much. I am only using the built-in mic on my laptop. I'll try an old standing mic, but so far I can't get it to do much. My old Dragon can't work on Windows 7. Greg
