Concering a syrinx.  From what I've heard from Dr. Falci, a neurosurgeon that
has operated and
untethered over 1000 syrinx's, a patient history, symptoms and exam is much
more important
than an MRI for a syrinx.   I wrote an article about this in New Mobility (see
below).
I hope it helps.

I am familiar with the syrinx, because I have one. Doing is not allowed to get
an MRI because her accident was due to kids playing with a gun in the house and
she was accidentally shot in the neck, she has metal fragments from the bullet
in her neck.
She also has a UTI about every 6 to 8 weeks like clockwork. Her GP is
completely useless as far as following up with the UTI checks and she won't go
to a urologist unless it is absolutely necessary.

When I went to college and stayed in a dorm I was seven years post and could
get myself in bed, on dress, dress, and transfer into my chair and also I could
take a shower by myself. When I moved into my apartment 10 years post I could
transfer in and out of bed but had a tub in my apartment. So I know what it is
like to be able to take care of myself if I have to, although in the past 25+
years I've had Pete with me and he has spoiled me so terribly that I don't do
anything for myself anymore.

I asked my family not too long ago "What am I going to do if anything happens
to Pete?" My youngest sister DeeDee said she would take me in and take care of
me. It was such a load off my mind and I had always feared that I would be put
in a nursing home.

Ron, I think this is a conversation you need to have with your family now and
not wait till you may not have a choice.

That's terrible. I would have never guessed she would be having so many issues.
The good part is she is thankful to Pete, she is going to need more help now
than ever. Her abdominal pain/ function loss in the right hand sounds like it
could be a fluid filled cyst in the center of the spine at the initial injury
site called a spinal syrinx. A simple mri of her back would reveal this.
