Hi Philip and everyone,
This morning I went out and bought a Manhattan Laser Lens Cleaner.
This is a CD with little bristles on it. I can guess what they do, but
how the disk itself works in a case like this is beyond me. It's beyond
my CD driver too because when I put it in the driver, the driver did not
acknowledge it. There are no instructions in the lens cleaner box. It
looks like its going to end up, as so many things do, involving that red
metal toolbox under my desk.
In a comical sidebar to the proceedings of the last couple of days, I
remembered the WGS 80 (!) sitting unplugged on a shelf above my head.
It faces the wall so that I have ease of access to the connections at
the rear of the machine. I 've been so focused on the 7100 and it's
problem that I'd forgotten that the WGS 80 also has a CD-Rom reader.
I thought, "Thank God," at least there's a potential workaround if I
have to use CD's. I fired up the 80 and slipped in the Mac OS 8.1
install disk. Yes, you guessed it. The 80's CD driver sat like a lump,
refusing to acknowledge the install disk. For a moment the face of Bart
Simpson flashed before my eyes and then I stuck the 'emulated' disk into
the 80. You guessed right again. The CD driver had no problem with it.
In a moment the icon was on the desktop.
In the light of this it seems Philip must be right. The thing must be
dirty. The disk I've been calling the 'emulated' disk has a different
appearance than the other disks I've been trying to read. It's made of
a plastic that is clear but tinted yellowish on the side the machine
reads. The other CD's appear clearer in the sense that there is less
translucent colour in the plastic. It's unfortunate that the laser lens
cleaner wasn't made of the yellowish plastic because a dirty laser lens
seems to be more sensitive to a disk like this.
Thanks to all who participated in this thread on both this and the
Quadlist. This hang up is already a couple of days long. Without the
list It would be several more days and probably quite a few dollars.
Best regards to all, John.
