No one is entirely sure yet, but the most prevalent theory is that the
Alchemy boards can't generate enough +3.3V current for their own needs.
The Gazelle boards have an onboard regulator that can supply just enough
current to keep the thing running.

No; the 6x0 series was the first with IDE hard disks.
