Macintosh printer cables are not wired "straight-through", but are in fact
crossover cables.

This is true because a Macintosh is a DTE and so also is a printer.

OTOH, a modem is a DCTE (AKA, DCE), and only a DCTE <---> DTE connection uses
a straight through cable.

All other connections, mainly DTE <---> DTE, but also the incredibly rare
DCTE <---> DCTE, need some kind of "modem eliminator", of which there are
several kinds.
