The startup sound is in the ROM infortunately, so any
settings you change in the OS make no difference. It's
annoying I know.

I have always just put up with it on my Quadra 610,
but I suggest you try 2 things.

1 - Plug some headphones or external speakers into the
speaker socket on the back of the mac, this may
dissable the internal speaker and then you can turn
the volume down on them. Actually this should sort it,
I just tried.

2 - Otherwise you could just open the mac and unplug
the internal speaker.
