Thinking of looking into this, I looked up power usages on Quadras:

Is this some sort of mistake:

It says 210W for a 610?

Those power ratings are the maximum rated power for the models listed. The actual power used in real life is going to be less.

The following are real power (W, not VA) measurements I've made:

Performa 6200 33 W (Closest model I have to the Q630)
Centris 660AV 42 W (pretty much the same as a Q610)
Quadra 605 15 W (same as the P475 someone was talking about)
Quadra 800 49 W
PowerBook G3 24 W (Kanga)
SMC Barricade 5 W (wireless hardware router)

All measurements are with the computer fully booted and the HD running. The Q605 machine has an LC PDS card installed all others have no added cards.

But at:
http://www.pacmeb.com/database/computers/quadrac/007.html
it lists 630 at only 45 wats. The difference makes no sense to me.

The Q610 has somewhat greater expandability. I think the biggest difference however is that the Q630 is designed to be compact and therefore heat is a bigger consideration. Consequently it's power supply was a tighter fit so to speak, power wise as well as physically.

I'd have to move some disks to get one of each working, but I was thinking of measuring the current usage. Has anyone done this for 610, 630?

As you can see a Q605 would make a good choice for a router except that is limited to one Ethernet interface (I couldn't recommend a SCSI-Ethernet adapter for this). A P6200 might make a good choice, you can put an LC and a Commslot NIC in it to get dual interfaces. I don't know if the Q630 has the same options.

An old PowerBook would also be a good choice although I'd hate to waste a Kanga for use as a router. It and the 3400 are the first models though that can take two NICs easily. They could handle three NICs including a wireless card. I have two NICs for my 5300 but both drivers couldn't be installed simultaneously. I've heard though that that might be a matter of which particular NICs you are trying to use.
