I tried SoftFPU 3.07 this morning - it allowed the program to run on a beige G3, but OS 9.2.1 crashed during shutdown. I have since read that other people have this problem with SoftFPU. Perhaps if I use an older OS, say 8.6 on a 7500, it will work?

One of the usual things to try is to change the load order of the extension in question. Try putting a space or underline at the front of the filename for SoftFPU to make it load first or last respectively.
