Is there a possibility that what you have is that the end that was fitted after
the cable was shortened has simply come off? My memories of making brake
cables in the 60's and 70's is that unless you "high temperature" silver solder
them as well as crimping, they eventually pull off. The exception is the
process used for boat fittings where the ends are crimped on using a force of
many tonnes - not managed to break one of those yet! Provided that no one has
tried to lead solder the end then it might be possible to melt it back in. If
you do attempt this as a TEMPORARY SOLUTION, try not to heat the wire too much
away from the end as it will reduce its tensile strength and possibly snap.

The Sierra cable is similar to the Fiesta one in that the adjuster is a plastic
fitting that runs on the spiral tubing that takes the cable load where is goes
from the chassis to the suspension - very coarse thread - and is kept in place
with a plastic locknut.

So something has gone ping and now the handbrake isn't working. I've taken
a brief look underneath and there's a piece of plastic that looks like it
should be attached to something, so I will probably need to replace it.

Firstly is it possible to do this without removing the diff?

What cable is used - looking at the distances it's not a Sierra one.

  Regards,
  Steve
