Thanks folks. Eventually I'll run the feed from the bulb. The biggest problem is that the original builder seems to have been allergic to electrics...
Sounds like the dash change isn't worth the effort. I'll see if I can find a replacement instrument pack instead; there are a lot of issues with the film circuit wearing away so bulbs are falling off or misconnecting. Gotcha with the bulb routing; I'd misinterpreted the diagram that the common feed was an earth. Only been reading the things forty years; I ought to know how my now. I'd figured it might be self starting, but it was doing it as soon as it started. Hmmm.
