Re: the Fault code reader, I am at Shoreham by Sea near Brighton. There may be
others nearer. N.B. I am no expert on petrol injected engines so please bear
this in mind before taking any advice.

Once the battery is disconnected all KAM info is lost so you are running on the
basic maps and starting the neural net calibration from scratch hence the rich
mixture to start from cold but, essentially, it should allow a start. At one
stage I disconnected all the sensors in turn and for idle the only essential
thing was the crankshaft sensor - other sensors such as air flow meter and
temperature could be disconnected with the engine running as it appears that
the idle governor looks only at engine speed but needless to say with stuff
disconnected the engine would not vary away from idle.

I have been through all of that again recently with my Beauford, where I had a
ridiculously rich mixture and was getting through gallons of fuel just driving
in and out of the garage but as soon as the car went on the road it sorted
itself out and now has exemplary emissions - for reference, I believe that the
details of this may be in the next QM.

In Geoff Ward's case I believe that the original ECU was eventually considered
to be scrap.

As a way-out thought, does your Escort have an 1800 Zetec with an EEC IV
controller? The Zetec that I have was originally intended for use in a 115 PS
Escort. I would at least triple check the wiring before putting components
from a known good engine on one that will not work! Maybe the other way round
would be safer and would keep your good ECU out of the issue.

The safe advice has to be "Do the fault check test before undertaking any
drastic measures". If you do go this route, remember you are just looking for
a start so best not to push your luck. Do you have any local friends who are
well schooled in such matters to provide assistance?

I had wondered about the timing being on the wrong stroke but the camshaft
sensor overcomes this issue and the plugs fire on both strokes.

  Hi Hamish,

I was working along the lines that something had been either damaged
or not connected properly after the head was put back on so hopefully
the loom hasn't been damaged (fingers crossed)

a..The crankshaft sensor I haven't checked yet as I assumed (wrongly)
that this produced the spark and the camshaft sensor triggered the
injectors. So I will check this.

b..The coil pack as I replied to Paul, I will "borrow" from my escort
but the spark certaintly looks healthy.

  c..Loads of fuel !!

  d..more fuel !!

  e..even more fuel !!

I live in Kent near Maidstone and would certaintly appreciate the loan
of a tester if anyone is near enough.;-)

The battery has been off charging overnight so I presume the KAM will
  be erased.

And finally thanks for the pointers and guidance to finding the ECU
  and test socket

Thanks once again Hamish and as for the luck I will need some of that
  too.

  Trevor
