Better versions with metal end clips were found from an audi donor. when fitted to ours the boot did not rise by it's self but also would not re-lock after using the remote release. The major benefit was they did not 'pop' off like many i have seen with pure plastic ends

I think the usual situation is that the struts balance the weight of the boot lid or hatchback etc. Certainly on our production car they do, and there is an additional spring plunger to open the first 10mm when the latch opens. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark D-B" <[email protected]>

Subject: [Quantum Owners] H4 boot gas struts

Hi All,

Does anyone have knowledge of the best rating for the gas struts on
the H4 boot?

One of ours needs replacing (the plastic end is about to part from
the threads) and in trying to find sources for replacement I have been
looking at the equation that Gas Strut Engineering (who made the ones
on the car at the moment back in 1999) have on their web site, 300 N
seems very low to get the boot to open when the electric release is
pressed. I am therefore thinking that getting 300 N replacements may
not avoid having to always open the boot with the key. As I don't know
the weight of the boot, and don't fancy taking it off to find out, I
can't use the equation accurately, so people's experience would be
very helpful.

All the best,

Mark
