Hi Glyn I had a similar problem with mine, but not so bad, it would only lock from the outside if I leaned against the door. After some investigation, I found that the locking mechanism was just worn, the only fix being replacement of the unit. If yours used to lock okay, it may just be worn. If it has never worked properly, it would be worth looking at the link from the door lock to the lock mechanism and seeing if that is moving freely. If the fault is in the mechanism, there's not a lot you can do except replace it.
