Surprisingly, my Fiat Coupe 20vt was excellent in the snow, silly
power and all - with snow tyres on. The viscous coupling across the
front axle helps no end by reducing slip between the front wheels.

I'd agree though - while fronts only will help, the car will be much
better with the higher grip tyres all around. Otherwise the back end
will be potentially rather squirrelly under braking.
