Hi Jim I was aware of the MK1 Mondeo 4x4, my brother-in-law used to own one a number of years ago, hardly anyone at the time would believe that it was a 4x4 until they took a quick look at the rear axle.
What is a bit frustrating is that I had the car in my front garden for about many months and wasn't interested in it, the gearbox, driveshafts, propshaft, diff etc, were all absolutely fine, he eventually sold it for scrap. I had no idea that many years later it would be of interest to me and I understand they are now also almost impossible to find, This is what caused me to think of the Jaguar MTX box etc.with an st170 engine, I will have to do some more digging on this to satisfy my curiosity. I understand that the Jaguar rear diff/suspension is connected to a subframe which is very similar to the MK3 Mondeo estate. I looked at my H4 today, assuming that a propshaft would at the same height as the centre of the wheel hubs it would be quite a bit above the height of the floor and also would bisect the fuel tank. Clearly the rear sub-frame etc, etc. would need to be narrowed, and the H4 chassis modified to give the subrame something to mount onto. In other words not for the faint hearted! I think I will keep with just putting in a 2 liter zetec for now! Regards Andrew .
