I even had a Ford parts guy try and tell me there was no such thing as a 4x4 Mondeo, until he looked on the computer.

I wouldn't say they are impossible to find, there usually seem to be one on Ebay.
I am scrapping one of mine, at the moment it's being a mobile shed.

I am expecting to have to make a custom fuel tank, or more likely, 2, one each side of the probe. The Mondeo 4x4 has a fuel tank with a tunnel down the middle and a fuel pump and sender in each side.

Hi Jim

I was aware of the MK1 Mondeo 4x4, my brother-in-law used to own one a number of years ago, hardly anyone at the time would believe that it was a 4x4 until they took a quick look at the rear axle.

What is a bit frustrating is that I had the car in my front garden for about many months and wasn't interested in it, the gearbox, driveshafts, propshaft, diff etc, were all absolutely fine, he eventually sold it for scrap. I had no idea that many years later it would be of interest to me and I understand they are now also almost impossible to find,

This is what caused me to think of the Jaguar MTX box etc.with an st170 engine, I will have to do some more digging on this to satisfy my curiosity. I understand that the Jaguar rear diff/suspension is connected to a subframe which is very similar to the MK3 Mondeo estate.

I looked at my H4 today, assuming that a propshaft would at the same height as the centre of the wheel hubs it would be quite a bit above the height of the floor and also would bisect the fuel tank.

Clearly the rear sub-frame etc, etc. would need to be narrowed, and the H4 chassis modified to give the subrame something to mount onto.

In other words not for the faint hearted!

I think I will keep with just putting in a 2 liter zetec for now!

Andrew

    Hi Andrew,
No, the Mk1 Mondeo 4x4 MTX75 gearbox (yes, they did make one, i
    own 2 off them).
I had to machine away some sections of the aluminium section of
the sump, build up others with weld and make a few new holes but
the gearbox does now mate with the engine and the transfer box
fits on the back of the engine (uses the same holes as the
driveshaft support bracket on the 2wd engine.
That is as far as i got 5 years ago at which point i acquired a
girlfriend, sold my house, bought a new house and am still getting
    things sorted.
Eventually, i will get back to the H4x4 project.

The current plan is to use the standard Mk3 Fiesta front
suspension but narrow the complete mondeo rear suspension for the
    rear.
The diff and the suspension all bolt to a subframe on the Mondeo.

The tunnel will have to be made a lot larger.

    Hi Jim

I assume you have gone for Jaguar X Type 4x4 gearbox fitted to a
Focus st170 engine? I have often wondered if this engine and
gearbox combination would actually fit one another, but I assumed
there must be a good possibility because I think its essentially
an MTX gearbox and the st170 engine is a Zetec.

My H4 is currently fitted with a 1.6 Zetec engine and IB5
gearbox, but I am going to change this for a 2.0 Zetec and an RS
Turbo series 2 gearbox with an LSD, I don't think my insurers,
or indeed me, would be happy with anything more than this for my
    18 year old son.

If we keep the H4 for a few years I would be tempted to go for a
turbocharged Zetec and a 4x4 set up, but I would have no idea how
to get the propshaft clearance, or deal with the rear suspension,
    diff mounting etc!

    Cheers

    Andrew

So if the gearbox from a st170 goes in could you not use
            the engine as
well ? just a silly thought?.

Do you mean one from a Focus ST170 or one of
                        the later MTX75 gearboxes ?
The ST170 gearbox was made by Getrag, i have
                        one i took off a ST170
engine so i could made the engine to a MTX75
                        4x4 gearbox.
The ST170 gearbox is actually quite short as
                        it's got 3 shafts (with 3
gears on each) not the normal 2 (with 5 or 6
                        gears on).
It should bolt onto the Zetec block with no
                        problems except some of the
lower gearbox to sump holes may not line up.
It will depend if it is a silver top or
                        blacktop Zetec, the blacktop
                        should match better.
It does use unique driveshaft splines and
joints so you will need to
                        get some custom driveshafts made.
And, of course you won't have the Mk2/3
                        Fiesta type mounting locations
on the gearbox so those will need to replace.
Also, the gearchange is cable but as long as
                        you've got the matching
linkage it should be too bad.
I may put the one i have in the 2+2 at some
                        point.

gearbox in a saloon when you
convert to a Zetec 2.0l. Just thought I'd
