ISTR the pump has a very thick gasket (about 5mm) could this be the reason for the difference? Did your old one just have a thin gasket, and therefore when the 'correct paired parts' are used it is ok? Is there possibly a (maybe partial) blockage? With the pipes disconnected from the tank and the underbonnet area, it may be worth using an airline or high-pressure bike pump to blow them through just to make sure. I'm having problems starting the 2+2, it has a 1.4 cvh engine with twin choke Weber and mechanical fuel pump. It always was a little difficult to start after a period of non use (6-7 days) but pumping the accelerator always got it going. The other week it refused to start and had been smelling of petrol, there was no fuel in the in-line clear fuel filter. I got it started by putting a fuel hose in a petrol can and after it started I found a leak in the return pipe from carb back to the tank, fixed this and everything had been fine. However it has now started to play up again, same symptoms, so ordered a new mechanical fuel pump. Now I have two issues.... The operating stud is about 4-5mm longer than the original fuel pump and it still isn't pumping up from the tank. Any ideas on packing /spaces for the new pump and what may be the problem at the tank end? I guess I may have to lay on the floor and have a look :o) Doesn't appear to be smelling of fuel anymore. If I prime it from the petrol can it will work (for ever),guess the engine running is better than pumping on the starter motor.
